On June 1, 1954 Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Armistice Day was created to honor veterans of the first World War. Veterans Day honors all military personnel that served the United States Of America in all wars.

An inspirational and emotional speech by SFC Louis C. Dyer, Recruiting & Retention NCO, SC Army National Guard was one of the highlights of the day during the Veterans Day Celebration at the American Legion Hut in Hampton. With tearful eyes and great appreciation for those in support of the military and their families, we were reminded of hardships that occur in protecting the freedom of our country.

CMSgt Jay Collars, USAF (ret.) invited the guests to attend a lunch prepared by the women of the American Legion Auxiliary. After lunch we had the opportunity to attend another highlight of the day – dedication of The Hut and a Historical Marker. The Hut has been placed on the National  Historical Registry.

As a reminder – the American Legion members have placed a box on the front porch of The Hut. If your flag is tattered and torn, you may put the flag in the box and the members will dispose of it in an appropriate manner. This box is only for the American flag.

On November 17, 2010  the students and faculty of Varnville Elementary School gave a hearty welcome to the Veterans. Lunch was served and entertainment was provided by the kindergarten class. Principal Donna Kinard gave a short history on the beginning of Veterans Day.  The Cub Cave Cafe was decorated in red, white and blue. The kindergarten students entertained the Veterans with three songs,  and at special moments each waved a small American flag.

My thanks to all who made this wonderful event occur.  Veterans, thank you for all you do across our land and foreign soil to protect our freedom and promote freedom.,
